Recently, the renowned beauty brand Drunk Elephant announced a voluntary recall in the United States for select batches of three popular products: Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser, Protini Polypeptide Cream, and Lala Retro Whipped Cream. The recall also includes sample packets of Lala Retro Whipped Cream found in the packaging of O-Bloos Rosi Drops, though the O-Bloos Rosi Drops product itself is not affected.
The brand revealed that the recall was triggered by “an isolated ingredient mix-up between preservatives and surfactants during production,” which compromised the formulation of certain batches. Drunk Elephant is urging consumers to stop using the affected products, which were sold through Ulta, Sephora (including Sephora at Kohl’s), Amazon, 3Sixty Duty Free, and the brand’s website.
Drunk Elephant has provided detailed information on its website regarding the specific issues with the affected products. All recalled items (Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser, Lala Retro Whipped Cream, and Protini Polypeptide Cream) are said to contain preservatives (Microkill COS) and surfactants (Mirataine CBS) that were not listed on the product labels.
According to Drunk Elephant, while the preservatives are commonly used in cosmetics, they may cause temporary skin reactions in sensitive individuals. Additionally, the absence of preservatives in some batches has led to the growth of yeast, including Candida parapsilosis, which poses a rare risk of infection, particularly for those with weakened immune systems.
In the comments section of Drunk Elephant’s recall announcement, some customers expressed concerns about the products they had purchased, while others thanked the brand for its transparency regarding the recall.
