Yesterday, Eliane Heilbronn, a trailblazing lawyer and influential figure within the family that owns Chanel, has passed away at the age of 99.
Her death was confirmed by Chanel on Sunday, with a statement noting, “Chanel is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Madame Eliane Heilbronn. The funeral will be held privately.”
Born in Paris in 1925 to Denise and Louis-Raymond Fischer, an architect and member of the French Resistance, Heilbronn’s early years were marked by upheaval. In 1947, she married Jacques Wertheimer, son of Pierre Wertheimer, the co-owner of Chanel and Bourjois.
They had two sons, Alain and Gérard, before divorcing in 1952. In 1974, she became a vital adviser to her eldest son Alain when he took over Chanel at just 25.
As cofounder of Salans Hertzfeld & Heilbronn, now part of Dentons, she shaped the legal framework for Chanel’s top executives, including drafting Karl Lagerfeld’s contract when he joined the house as creative director in 1982.
