Estée Lauder Opens New Site in Belgium, Aiming to Innovate Bio-Based Raw Materials

Yesterday, The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has unveiled its new BioTech Hub in Olen, Belgium, near its manufacturing and distribution campus in Oevel. This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to developing innovative bio-based raw materials, marking a significant step forward in sustainability and product innovation for the global beauty leader.

The BioTech Hub will focus exclusively on producing proprietary bio-based alternatives to traditional ingredients, leveraging biotechnology to advance sustainability across ELC’s product development and manufacturing processes. Biotechnology harnesses living organisms such as plants, yeast, or bacteria to create raw materials, preserving biodiversity and reducing environmental impact.

Roberto Canevari, Executive Vice President of Global Supply Chain at ELC, highlighted the importance of this initiative:  “Our prestige beauty products depend on the highest quality raw materials. By producing our own biotechnology-based materials at one of our main manufacturing campuses, we are able to manufacture at scale in a more responsible way. This is a great example of how our end-to-end Value Chain is partnering to advance innovation and sustainability across the enterprise.”

The hub’s engineers and scientists will develop active biomolecules derived from plant, yeast, and bacteria sources. These will serve as raw materials for thousands of skincare products across ELC’s portfolio, including well-known brands like Estée Lauder and La Mer. The team will collaborate closely with advanced technologies scientists from ELC’s Melville, New York Research & Development labs, ensuring synergy in fermentation and bio-based material innovation. Furthermore, the hub will work with ELC’s manufacturing teams in Belgium to scale up production.

Carl Haney, ELC’s Executive Vice President of Research, Product, and Innovation, emphasized the hub’s strategic significance:  “This new value chain site will serve as a critical space for our scientists to continue embedding sustainability at the start of the product development process and build upon our strengths in fermentation and proprietary ingredients.”

Set to commence commercial production in 2025 after months of production testing, the BioTech Hub will increase ELC’s capacity for in-house production of bio-based materials.
