Recently, a California hair stylist, Hector Corvera, has filed a lawsuit against L’Oréal USA, Inc., Redken, Wella Professionals, and other manufacturers of hair dye products, alleging that his bladder cancer diagnosis was caused by decades of exposure to harmful chemicals in professional salon products.
Corvera claims that his career as a licensed cosmetologist, during which he regularly used permanent hair dyes, led to his bladder cancer diagnosis in June 2023. The lawsuit argues that the chemicals in these dyes, including carcinogens such as 4-Aminobiphenyl (4-ABP) and Ortho-Toluidine, were directly responsible for his illness. These substances have been classified as Group 1 human carcinogens by both the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP), with scientific studies showing that hairdressers exposed to these chemicals are at a significantly higher risk of developing bladder cancer.
Despite research linking hair dye chemicals to cancer, Corvera’s lawsuit alleges that the manufacturers have failed to reformulate their products or warn hair stylists of the potential health risks. The lawsuit claims that these companies prioritized profits over safety by continuing to sell products without necessary warnings. Corvera highlights the fact that, while exposure to these chemicals has been well-documented, the manufacturers marketed their products as safe and omitted crucial warnings from labels and promotional materials.
Corvera’s complaint also points out that he was exposed to a range of popular professional hair dye products, such as Matrix, Paul Mitchell, Joico, Wella, Redken, and Clairol Professional, among others. The lawsuit argues that these companies could have chosen safer alternatives to the harmful chemicals still used in their formulations.
The lawsuit presents several legal claims, including strict liability for failure to warn, negligent failure to warn, deceit by concealment, and violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law. In addition to seeking compensation for medical expenses, pain, and suffering, Corvera is pursuing punitive damages, alleging that the manufacturers acted with reckless disregard for consumer safety.
