Recently, thousands of people in the UK are preparing to sue Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in one of the largest pharmaceutical product group actions in English and Welsh legal history. The legal action, brought by 3,500 claimants, alleges that J&J’s talcum powder products were contaminated with asbestos, which is linked to various cancers, including ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and peritoneal cancer.
Lawyers representing the claimants, led by the specialist firm KP Law, argue that J&J was aware as early as the 1970s that its talc products contained dangerous levels of asbestos. Despite this knowledge, the company continued to sell the talcum powder in the UK until 2022 without warning consumers of the potential risks.
The group action follows a similar long-running legal battle in the United States, where J&J has faced thousands of lawsuits over alleged links between talc and cancer, a claim the company consistently disputes.
Tom Longstaff, a partner at KP Law, emphasized the devastating impact on the lives of those who used the products, many of whom have died from their cancers, leaving their families in grief. He stated, “All of these innocent individuals deserve justice.”
The claimants include a significant number of women who developed ovarian cancer, as well as individuals who contracted mesothelioma and peritoneal cancer. The number of claimants has risen sharply since last November, when 1,900 people were represented by KP Law.
J&J, which has faced similar legal challenges in the US, maintains that its talcum powder products are safe and do not cause cancer. A spokesperson for Kenvue, which now handles talc-related claims outside the US and Canada, asserted that decades of testing by medical experts demonstrate the safety of their talc products. The spokesperson further claimed that the legal action in the UK was an attempt to exploit cancer patients and spread unfounded fears about talc.
