Revlon Sues Former Employees for Sabotaging Long-Term Partnership with Britney Spears

Recently, Revlon has filed a lawsuit against four former employees, accusing them of sabotaging its long-standing partnership with pop icon Britney Spears. The beauty giant, along with its subsidiary Elizabeth Arden, alleges that the ex-employees stole valuable trade secrets related to their licensing deal to market Spears’ perfumes. These employees, Vanessa Kidd, Dominick Romeo, Ashley Fass, and Reid Mulvihill, are said to have breached their contracts by moving to rival company Give Back Beauty, bringing the Britney Spears fragrance account with them.

Though an initial delay in Spears re-signing the 20-year perfume partnership deal was “attributed to Ms. Spears being preoccupied with other matters,” Revlon claims it eventually realized that its own executives had been orchestrating a corporate heist.

“Revlon and Elizabeth Arden were completely unaware that Revlon’s own team was actively sabotaging one of their most valuable licensing relationships,” the company’s lawyers claim.

Revlon’s relationship with Britney Brands, which began in 2004 and was renewed every five years, produced popular fragrances like Curious, Prerogative, and Circus. When she released “Curious” later that year, it quickly became the top selling fragrance of the year and reportedly pulled in more than $100 million in sales.

According to the complaint filed in the New York Southern District Court, Revlon claims that the refusal was a direct result of the actions of Kidd and Romeo, who had been working closely on the Britney Brands account before their departure. The lawsuit alleges that Kidd accessed over 250 files related to Elizabeth Arden’s fragrance business before leaving, while Fass is accused of downloading confidential information about the subsidiary’s fragrance licenses.

But according to the lawsuit, Give Back Beauty had launched a “campaign to obtain the Britney Brands fragrance business,” including contacting the Elizabeth Arden staffers as early as February: “This was obviously a carefully planned and executed grab by GBB for the Revlon fragrance business.”

Revlon is seeking damages and legal remedies for the alleged breach of contract and theft of trade secrets, aiming to protect its business interests and the integrity of its relationship with Britney Spears’ brand.
