Anti-Aging “New Species”: Transdermal Collagen Light Technology

Earlier this year, the State Council of China issued Document No. 1, which explicitly proposed the development of the anti-aging industry, adding a new impetus to the already thriving anti-aging market. Senior industry experts believe that this is the first time the country has supported the development of the anti-aging industry at the national level, and it holds significant importance for the future development of the anti-aging field.

Against this backdrop, the entire industry has shown great enthusiasm in exploring anti-aging technologies. Recently, CHAILEEDO learned that a new revolution has taken place in the field of infrared anti-aging technology. A cutting-edge anti-aging technology led by Nobel laureate in physics, Professor Theodor W. Hänsch, has entered the public’s attention. This technology, known as “Transdermal Collagen Light Technology,” is capable of stimulating comprehensive production of superficial, intermediate, and deep collagen in the dermis, thus achieving a highly effective anti-aging effect and reducing facial wrinkles.

So, what is the principle behind this technology, and in what areas can it be applied? CHAILEEDO has conducted an in-depth investigation to find out.

New Anti-Aging Technology “Transdermal Collagen Light Technology”

From a broad perspective, the anti-aging market includes skincare products, medical aesthetics, health supplements, sports and fitness, and other fields. According to CHAILEEDO data, the annual average growth rate of the anti-aging market from 2017 to 2022 exceeded 10%. Based on this estimation, the skincare and anti-aging market in China is expected to reach 154 billion yuan in 2024.

Market insights clearly indicate that consumers have a strong demand for anti-aging solutions. Among the population concerned with anti-aging in China, 80.2% have started using anti-aging products before the age of 35. Additionally, consumer focus on anti-aging has shifted “from the surface to the inside,” meaning that the demand for reducing superficial wrinkles has expanded to include the stimulation of collagen protein regeneration in the dermis. This trend has also led to increased popularity of at-home beauty devices and advanced beauty treatments.

Collagen protein plays a crucial role in skin anti-aging research. Generally, human skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The water content in the epidermis is 30%, in the subcutaneous layer it is 70%, and in the dermis, it is also 70%. Research shows that within the near-infrared light range of 760-1940nm, the absorption rate of water for light energy increases by several orders of magnitude. Although longer wavelengths have better skin penetration, the efficiency of energy transfer decreases as the absorption coefficient increases. Therefore, in the short-wave near-infrared range (760-1400nm), energy can effectively reach deeper depths and act on the deep layers of the dermis. In the long-wave near-infrared range (1400-1940nm), most of the energy is absorbed by the water in the upper layers of the dermis, primarily affecting the superficial layers.

Based on the above principles, Theodor W. Hänsch and his research team have developed a combination of near-infrared short-wave (760-1400nm) and near-infrared long-wave (1400-1940nm) light waves, naming it “Transdermal Collagen Light Technology.” It is understood that this light wave can penetrate 4.5mm into the subcutaneous layer and stimulate comprehensive production of superficial, intermediate, and deep collagen in the dermis, resulting in a highly effective anti-aging effect and reduction of facial wrinkles.

Dr. Xu Nan, Director of the Dermatology Department at Shanghai East Hospital, explained to CHAILEEDO that Transdermal Collagen Light Technology is a non-invasive skin treatment. It directly penetrates the dermis with light of specific wavelengths, effectively delivering light energy to different depths of the skin. This activation of collagen regeneration increases skin elasticity and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Xu Nan stated, “Moreover, this wavelength can also stimulate fibroblasts in the skin, comprehensively promoting the production of collagen protein and combating skin aging. Therefore, by promoting the regeneration of collagen fibers and elastic fibers, it also helps improve skin laxity and has a firming effect on facial contours.” In summary, the main benefits of Transdermal Collagen Light Technology are strong anti-aging effects and reducing facial wrinkles.

An Anti-Aging New Species Beyond the RF Experience

As we all know, starting from April 1st this year, radiofrequency beauty devices have been classified under three categories of medical devices, requiring brands to obtain medical device registration certificates in order to sell such products. However, currently, no company has obtained the certification. As a result, radiofrequency beauty devices are temporarily off the market, and well-known domestic and international beauty device brands such as Yameng, Miguang, Huazhi, and Jimeng have all removed radiofrequency beauty devices from their product lineup.

Although radiofrequency beauty devices have temporarily exited the stage, consumers’ advanced demands for anti-aging have not changed. Therefore, there is a strong demand for anti-aging technologies that are safer, effective, and can be used in the long term. Transdermal Collagen Light Technology happens to meet this demand.

It is reported that compared to the physical method of heating the dermis through thermal conduction used by radiofrequency devices, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology promotes the regeneration of collagen protein in four major ways:

First, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology utilizes the good penetration of infrared light to directly target the dermis, resulting in higher thermal efficiency.

Second, near-infrared short-wave (760-1400nm) stimulates deep-layer collagen production in the dermis, promoting fundamental anti-aging effects, while near-infrared long-wave (1400-1940nm) stimulates superficial-layer collagen production, providing visible effects on reducing facial fine lines. Compared to radiofrequency, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology covers a wider range of the dermis, resulting in better anti-aging effects.

Third, in addition to promoting collagen protein production in the dermis through physical heating, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology also stimulates key cells in the human body, such as ATP production, through biological actions. It also promotes the regeneration of fibroblasts and collagen proteins, achieving anti-aging effects.

Fourth, radiofrequency is limited by the number and size of electrodes and can only create linear arc thermal fields with a small coverage area. However, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology utilizes light technology without any gaps, forming a large-area thermal field, resulting in higher efficiency in anti-aging compared to radiofrequency.

Xu Nan also stated that Transdermal Collagen Light Technology provides a more comprehensive anti-aging effect. It not only helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles but also enhances skin firmness and elasticity. Therefore, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology is also referred to as the “anti-aging new species” in the field of dermatology.

At-home anti-aging devices brands have already applied Transdermal Collagen Light Technology.

So, as a new anti-aging technology, what are the differences between Transdermal Collagen Light Technology and traditional light therapies? Is it safe?

In this regard, Xu Nan explains that one of the main advantages of Transdermal Collagen Light Technology lies in its safety. Since collagen light can directly penetrate the epidermis and act on the dermis, it does not damage the epidermis. “Moreover, compared to photon rejuvenation, which is a non-ablative beauty method, it has common issues with photonic procedures. If the treatment plan does not match the skin type, it may cause some side effects such as heat, facial flushing, scabbing and blistering, and pigmentation. Transdermal Collagen Light Technology, on the other hand, is non-invasive and gentle, suitable for most skin types.”

It can be seen that compared to traditional light therapy, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology not only accurately targets the deep layers of the skin to promote collagen regeneration, achieving “comprehensive anti-aging,” but also provides a virtually painless treatment process. Xu Nan further states, “After using Transdermal Collagen Light Technology treatment, it is only necessary to take sun protection and moisturizing measures, without affecting normal life and work. Finally, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology brings visible results in reducing facial fine lines and achieving overall skin rejuvenation.”

In summary, compared to traditional light therapy, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology has the characteristics of painlessness, non-invasiveness, quick recovery, and fast results.

In fact, there are already similar technologies based on Transdermal Collagen Light Technology principles available on the market and used in medical aesthetics procedures. For example, the NIR Milk Light project has clinically validated anti-aging effects. It is suitable for improving skin laxity, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and brightening the complexion, especially for facial anti-aging with good results.

Xu Nan believes that as an emerging anti-aging technology, Transdermal Collagen Light Technology’s advantage lies in its ability to combine near-infrared short-wave and near-infrared long-wave light waves, penetrating to specific depths beneath the skin to comprehensively promote collagen regeneration. “Furthermore, the light uniformity of transdermal collagen light is better than that of NIR Milk Light, which may mean that it can stimulate collagen production more comprehensively, not limited to a specific skin layer, thereby achieving more comprehensive treatment effects. Additionally, due to the strong penetration power of Transdermal Collagen Light Technology, its anti-aging effects are more significant and long-lasting.”

It is worth noting that according to CHAILEEDO’s understanding, some leading home beauty device brands have already incorporated Transdermal Collagen Light Technology into their product development. It is foreseeable that the introduction of this technology and the launch of beauty devices utilizing it may lead to a new wave of anti-aging trends.
