Yesterday, Boots, the UK’s leading health and beauty retailer, has appointed Anthony Hemmerdinger as its new Managing Director for the UK and Ireland, effective from November 4. The announcement from Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) follows the news in July that current MD Seb James would step down after six years of successful leadership to pursue a role in the healthcare sector.
Hemmerdinger, who has been with Boots since September 2022 as Retail & Operations Director, has played a key role in the transformation of the company. Leading a team that oversees around 1,900 stores and distribution centres, he has driven significant changes, particularly in the beauty and healthcare segments, positioning Boots as the UK’s top health and beauty destination. His leadership also included the successful execution of a large-scale beauty re-fit and brand expansion program across the chain.
With over 30 years of experience in UK retail, including roles at Asda, Sainsbury’s, and M&S, Hemmerdinger brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. He previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Asda for six years and began his career with a Saturday job at Boots decades ago.
Ornella Barra, EVP and COO at WBA, praised Hemmerdinger’s leadership and deep retail expertise, emphasizing his strong customer service focus and relationships within the business. She expressed confidence that he would continue to build on Boots’ recent growth and transformation. Barra also extended gratitude to Seb James for his leadership, wishing him well in his future endeavors.
