On October 22nd, the 2024 (10th) China Cosmetics Trends Conference, hosted by CHAILEEDO and supported by NBC, Trautec, Winkey, and COSMAX, was held in Shanghai!
This conference, themed “Technology Anti-Aging,” saw leading beauty and cosmetics companies from China and internationally sharing the latest trends in technological anti-aging. Concurrently, numerous companies along the cosmetics industry supply chain exhibited their latest products and technologies. During the event, Head of Shiseido China Innovation Center HIDEFUMI ARAKI delivered a presentation titled “Innovation in Anti-Aging Technology ans the Leading Asian Beauty Expert”.
Below is a recap of the speech:
Respected guests, hello everyone.
As the first international cosmetics group to enter the Chinese market, Shiseido firmly believes that a deep understanding of Asian skin characteristics is crucial to driving research and innovation in skin science. Today, I am honored to showcase Shiseido’s latest research achievements in anti-aging skincare for Asian skin.
In 1916, Shiseido established its first research center in Japan. Since then, Shiseido has continued to deepen and expand its global foundational research in skin science. Currently, we have research centers in the United States, France, Singapore, and two research centers each in Beijing and Shanghai.
Since 2000, we have been dedicated to conducting skin research globally to better understand the differences between Asian and other consumers around the world, in order to provide higher quality products. From 2021 to 2024, around 280 Asian women and 130 Caucasian women participated in Shiseido’s Asian skin research, where we collected over 15,000 data points and more than 10,000 images.
First, I will share a case study of anti-aging products tailored to Asian skin characteristics.
The research revealed that Asian women face specific skin issues at different ages: in their twenties, issues include dark circles, blackheads, and oiliness; in their thirties, enlarged pores, dryness, and pigmentation; and in their forties, pigmentation, wrinkles, and under-eye bags. Compared to Caucasian women, Asian women have more prominent pigment issues around the eyes, and their facial skin tends to sag faster with age, especially around the tear trough and nasolabial folds.
Based on these findings, we delved into the development trends of pigmentation issues. The research showed that Chinese women have significant pigmentation issues on the face and around the eyes. Additionally, we conducted studies on facial wrinkle problems. While wrinkles are less common in young Chinese women, tear trough wrinkles often appear early, becoming more prominent after the age of 50 compared to Caucasian women.
Through this research, Shiseido discovered that the solution to anti-aging for Asian skin involves addressing fine lines, firmness, and brightness. To meet these needs, in April this year, Shiseido launched the “Shiseido Eudermine Intelligence Sculpting Anti-Wrinkle Cream” containing pure retinol.
Next, I will introduce Shiseido’s solution for combating skin sagging.
We have developed a measurement technique called “4D Digital Skin” that utilizes AI image processing technology to observe subtle changes in the skin’s internal structure. This technology allows us to accurately capture the conditions of sweat glands, adipose tissue, and arrector pili muscles within the skin. The research found that in young people, the arrector pili muscles within the skin are firmer, providing support to the skin; as one ages, the function of these muscles declines, leading to skin sagging. Particularly, the sunken appearance of tear troughs and nasolabial folds is more pronounced in Asian women.
Unlike wrinkles, skin sagging is rooted in the aging of the skin’s internal structure, especially causing sagging in the cheeks with age. Based on this discovery, in August this year, Shiseido launched the “Elixir Uplifting and Firming Cream,” focusing on sagging issues, which has garnered widespread praise from consumers.
In the future, we will continue to pay attention to the skincare needs of Chinese consumers, innovate, and bring more skincare solutions to the Chinese market, helping Chinese consumers scientifically understand cosmetics knowledge and skincare techniques. Shiseido’s China Research Center has also established social media accounts on Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) and Douyin (TikTok), and we look forward to your attention.
