Superdrug has revealed an ambitious plan to invest in expanding its presence, intending to launch 25 new stores or expand existing ones in the UK this year, coinciding with its sixtieth anniversary in the country. Superdrug has over 780 stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland, making it one of the largest beauty and health retailers in the UK.
The beauty and health retailer is concentrating on enhancing its store formats in prime retail locations, with plans to expand its store network expected to generate over 500 employment opportunities.
The initiative has already commenced, with the Craigavon store in Northern Ireland doubling in size to 5,800 square feet. Additionally, the Lakeside Thurrock store has been extended to 7,669 square feet, featuring a new fragrance counter and Nurse services.
Among the upcoming openings this year are its largest-ever stores, including three premier locations at St David’s in Cardiff, Bluewater Shopping Centre, and Westfield Stratford City.
The company will also extend seven existing stores and renovate 60 others throughout 2024. These renovations will involve installing new storefronts, recyclable signage, upgraded flooring, and ceiling tiles made from environmentally friendly materials such as bio-soluble mineral wool, clay, and starch. Additionally, energy-efficient LED lighting will be implemented, along with new floor layouts and improved fascia and internal signage.
This investment aligns with the brand’s ongoing focus on an O+O (Online + Offline) platform strategy to achieve its omnichannel goals and is supported by consistently strong performance metrics. Recent data indicates a 9.2% increase in total sales and a 7.1% rise in like-for-like sales during the Christmas period.
Superdrug Property Director Nigel Duxbury said: “We’ve changed a lot in the 60 years since the first Superdrug store opened in Putney high-street. This investment into bricks-and-mortar means we can grow our footprint in key locations and highlights our ongoing commitment to high streets and retail shopping destinations, which are an integral part of local communities and economy.”
