Recently, several netizens posted on social media platforms that the niche American skincare brand Peter Thomas Roth is withdrawing from Sephora. Today, staff from Sephora’s flagship store in Xiangyang, Shanghai, and Henglong Plaza store in Wuhan confirmed to CHAILEEDO that Peter Thomas Roth has indeed begun withdrawing its products, and there are not many products left for sale.
It is worth noting that as early as February 25th of this year, the official Peter Thomas Roth store on Tmall ceased operations. The brand’s official Weibo, WeChat, and Xiaohongshu accounts also stopped updating in July 2023. Following these closures, Sephora became the brand’s only remaining sales channel in China. With its withdrawal from Sephora, this may signify the complete exit of Peter Thomas Roth from the Chinese market.
Public records show that Peter Thomas Roth (referred to as Peter), the founder, was originally an actor who transitioned to opening a beauty salon in 1993, catering to celebrity skincare needs. In the same year, he established his eponymous brand Peter Thomas Roth, with the brand philosophy “Breakthrough formulas. Astonishing results,” launching popular products like the “Cucumber Gel Mask,” “Potent-C Power Serum,” and “24K Gold Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Hydra-Gel Eye Patches,” which quickly became popular in Hollywood.
Simultaneously, Peter collaborated with Hilton Hotels to provide shampoo, shower gel, soap, and lotion as disposable hotel amenities, providing a stable income source for the brand.
In 2010, Peter Thomas Roth entered the Chinese market through Sephora and consecutively ranked first among Sephora’s exclusive brands for five years. Around 2021, to further penetrate the Chinese market, the brand launched a flagship store on Tmall. At that time, Peter publicly stated that the brand saw exponential growth in online channels, mainly due to its comprehensive layout within Sephora.
On Sephora’s official Tmall flagship store, Peter Thomas Roth has only six products available, down from 15 products in February. A staff member at Sephora’s Xiangyang flagship store in Shanghai said that due to the upcoming withdrawal, “Peter Thomas Roth’s products are now limited, and the star product, the Potent-C Power Serum series, is out of stock.” From the on-site pictures taken by the staff, only eight individual products and one set are left in the store.
On Sephora’s mini-program, Peter Thomas Roth currently lists 36 products, but 27 of them are marked as “sold out.”
