Recently, Mexico’s Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has ordered the immediate recall of Colgate Total Active Prevention Clean Mint Toothpaste after receiving consumer reports of adverse reactions. The decision requires Colgate-Palmolive to remove the product from store shelves nationwide and urges consumers to stop using it and return it to the company.
According to Cofepris, reported symptoms include oral irritation, gum inflammation, oral pain, tooth sensitivity, ulcers or canker sores, boils, and allergic reactions. The commission advised anyone experiencing such symptoms to consult a healthcare professional. While the exact ingredient responsible has not been identified, authorities confirmed the toothpaste is manufactured in Mexico and stressed that the recall applies solely to this specific Colgate variant.
The move follows similar actions in other countries. In July, Argentina’s National Administration of Drugs, Food and Medical Technology banned the sale of Colgate Total Clean Mint in all forms and sizes after comparable complaints. Brazilian health records show 11,441 adverse reaction cases linked to the toothpaste between its July 2024 launch and June 18, 2025. Argentina’s regulator noted that the Brazilian and Argentine products share the same formula, origin, and manufacturing plant as the Mexican version.
