Recently, French department store giant Galeries Lafayette has announced plans to invest €400 million over the next five years to modernize its operations and expand its store footprint. The investment aims to enhance customer experience, adapt to the evolving retail landscape, and strengthen the group’s international presence.
It is reported that Galeries Lafayette is a French luxury department store chain and the largest department store chain in Europe. Due to its high-end positioning, the chain has also attracted many premium beauty brands to establish a presence. On the Galeries Lafayette website, well-known brands such as Chanel, Guerlain, Dior, Clarins, and Sisley are all available for purchase.
“Continuing to invest massively is essential,” stated Nicolas Houzé, president of Galeries Lafayette’s executive committee, in an interview with La Tribune. While the funding will prioritize digital solutions, it will also address operational infrastructure, including upgrades to escalators and air conditioning systems. Additionally, the investment will focus on highly visible projects, such as the renovation of the iconic dome of the group’s Haussmann flagship store in Paris, which received €100 million as part of a previous €400 million investment plan.
The retail industry has faced significant challenges in recent years, with disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of e-commerce impacting traditional business models. Houzé emphasized that modernization is crucial to staying competitive in this rapidly changing environment.
Currently, Galeries Lafayette operates 57 department stores in France, including 19 directly operated stores and 38 franchised stores. Outside of France, Galeries Lafayette has 9 department stores. Galeries Lafayette also plans to expand its international footprint, with two new stores set to open in India. The first will launch in Mumbai in 2025, followed by a New Delhi location in 2026. This marks a strategic move to capture growth in emerging markets and diversify its global presence.
