Recently, The Health Ministry in KUALA LUMPUR has revoked the notification of two cosmetic products after they were found to contain scheduled poisons. These products, Alias Wild Rose Petal Face Cream and Desha Night Cream, can no longer be sold in the country.
Health director-general, Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, announced in a statement that the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency discovered the presence of mercury and tretinoin in these products. Mercury, which is banned in cosmetic products, can be absorbed into the body and cause serious health issues such as kidney and nervous system damage, as well as disrupt brain development in children or fetuses. Additionally, mercury exposure can lead to skin rashes and irritation.
Dr. Radzi also highlighted the dangers of using tretinoin without medical supervision. Unsupervised use can result in side effects including skin redness, discomfort, stinging, peeling, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
Non-compliance can result in fines up to RM25,000 or imprisonment for up to three years for the first offence, with higher penalties for subsequent offences. Companies can face fines up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for further violations.
