Recently, Amika has announced the voluntary recall of its Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo after it failed to meet regulatory requirements. The recall, issued on January 6, affects Mirrorball shampoos from both 2023 and 2024.
In a statement, the brand confirmed that only this specific product is impacted, and no other Amika products are involved. The recall comes after feedback from customers reported a change in odor and, in rare instances, temporary irritation. Although no serious health incidents have been reported, Amika explained that certain production batches from its third-party manufacturing site may have been contaminated with a bacterium called Pseudomonas gergoviae, which failed to meet the company’s stringent quality standards.
Amika advised consumers to stop using the product immediately, even if the shampoo does not appear to have any odor or visible quality issues. Retailers such as TKMaxx, Sephora, and Cult Beauty have also recalled the product from their shelves.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a warning that P. gergoviae poses a microbiological risk, as it can alter the product’s odor and, in rare cases, cause irritation. While infections in healthy individuals are uncommon, the bacterium can lead to severe infections in those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions, including respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis.
