Recently, CRLab, based in Encinitas, CA, has issued a recall of its Extra Strong With Basil and Blueberry hairspray due to contamination with dichloromethane, a potentially harmful chemical. The recall, impacting 578 cans of the product, was initiated on December 12 and later classified as a Class II recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 26.
Dichloromethane, a volatile solvent commonly used in industrial applications, has been banned in products in many areas, including the U.S. and the European Union, due to its potential health risks.
Prolonged exposure to this chemical has been linked to serious health issues such as dizziness, headaches and liver damage, and it is also considered a possible carcinogen.
The affected hairspray, identifiable by its UPC code 8 009299 050064, was distributed across multiple states, including Michigan, California, Arkansas, New York, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Washington, Maryland, New Jersey, and Illinois. Consumers in these areas are advised to discontinue use of the product immediately and follow the company’s guidelines for returns or disposal.
