Walmart Plans to Lay Off 1,500 Employees

Yesterday, according to report, Walmart is planning to cut approximately 1,500 jobs as part of a broad restructuring effort aimed at simplifying its operations and accelerating its transformation for the future of retail, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. The move will impact teams across its global technology operations, U.S. e-commerce fulfillment centers, and its advertising division, Walmart Connect.

The company, which is the largest private employer in the U.S. with around 1.6 million employees, said the restructuring will involve both the elimination of some roles and the creation of new ones. “To accelerate our progress delivering the experiences that will define the future of retail, we must sharpen our focus,” the memo stated.

This latest round of cuts follows previous workforce changes, including the closure of a North Carolina office in February and the relocation of employees to main hubs in California and Arkansas. Walmart also recently announced that it will raise prices on select products by the end of May due to higher supply chain costs driven by trade tensions, notably the impact of tariffs linked to former President Donald Trump’s trade war with China.

Walmart has significantly increased its investment in the beauty sector over the past two years, aiming to enhance both its product offerings and in-store experiences. In 2024, the retailer introduced over 60 new beauty brands, ranging from affordable essentials to premium lines like Curology, Pretty Smart, and COSRX. This expansion reflects Walmart’s commitment to providing a diverse and inclusive beauty assortment that caters to a wide range of consumer preferences.

To further elevate the shopping experience, Walmart piloted “Beauty Bars” in 40 select stores in 2025. These dedicated spaces allow customers to receive personalized consultations, test products, and engage with beauty experts, bridging the gap between mass retail and specialty beauty experiences.

As the country’s largest importer, sourcing about 60% of its goods from China—including clothing, electronics, and toys—Walmart continues to grapple with the broader effects of global supply chain disruptions and rising operational expenses.
