Yesterday (October 11), Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. announced that it has appointed Tim Wentworth as its new CEO. Wentworth brings with him a wealth of experience in the healthcare sector, having previously served as the founding CEO of Evernorth, Cigna’s health services organization that collaborates with health plans, employers, and government entities.
It is reported that prior to his role at Cigna, Wentworth held the position of CEO at Express Scripts, the largest pharmacy benefit manager in the United States. He assumed this role following the merger of Express Scripts with Medco Health Solutions Inc. in 2012. With his deep understanding of the payer and pharmacy space, as well as expertise in supply chain, IT, and human resources, Wentworth is well-equipped to lead Walgreens Boots Alliance into its next phase of growth as a customer-centric healthcare company.
Stefano Pessina, executive chairman of Walgreens Boots Alliance, expressed the board’s satisfaction with Wentworth’s appointment, emphasizing the importance of selecting a CEO with extensive healthcare experience. Pessina affirmed his confidence in Wentworth’s leadership abilities and his ability to guide the company in its evolution towards a customer-focused healthcare enterprise.
Wentworth’s appointment comes after the departure of Roz Brewer, the former CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance. Brewer, who previously served as the chief operating officer of Starbucks and held executive positions at Sam’s Club, led the company through the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, spearheading initiatives such as the development of a vaccine scheduling system and efforts to ensure vaccine equity. However, the company has faced challenges in regaining its momentum in recent times.
